File Error Dialog Boxes Popping Up Saying You Can’t? Here’s a Way to Change a Computer’s No into Yes!
You’re in the midst of your work using your computer and upon clicking with your mouse; a dialog box appears saying it cannot perform the action you want to take in your file or folder. The question is not always why it doesn’t work. The question is how long your file or folder’s pathname is.
First of all, for the less technically inclined, what is a path name?
Pathname is the name a computer use to locate a file that the user wants to find. The pathname can be found in the Location box or Look In box.
The first component of the pathname is the root directory. The root directory is usually the drive letter. An example of a path name is:
Here is the reason behind those pesky dialog boxes. Windows OS and other file managing utilities can only handle pathnames of 255 characters. Outside that limit, the computer will refuse to open, find, delete or copy a file or folder.
Any of these can appear in your dialog box:
- File cannot be copied
- Error Copying File or Folder.
- There has been a sharing violation.
- The source or destination file may be in use.
- The file is in use by another program or user.
- The file could not be accessed.
- Could not find this item.
Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.
